Rio Celeste Guided Rainforest Hike & Finca Verde Farm

Legend has it, once God was done painting the sky, he washed the brushes he had used in the clear waters of a river named Rio Celeste (light blue river). In reality, this peculiar color is due to a chemical reaction that reflects the sunlight through the water and occurs during the joining of two streams that give birth to the river – this place is known as the “Teñideros”. Rio Celeste is one of the most beautiful and scenic rivers in Costa Rica, located in the lush rainforests of Tenorio Volcano National Park, not yet discovered by mass tourism.

The park is home to an incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna, including tapirs, wild cats, monkeys, toucans and a vast variety of amphibians and reptiles. During this 3-hour walk, we will visit a magnificent waterfall with its river dyed light blue; hot water springs (swimming not allowed by the park’s administrative rules); fumaroles of volcanic gases with temperatures up to 1500 °F; and the “Borbollones”, where exhaust gases at the base of the river give the appearance of boiling water.

The next stop is in Finca Verde Farm, a private farm-reserve where we will be taken on an inspiring and educational walk, showcasing natural wonders such as tropical plants and flowers, birds, sloths, frogs, snakes, insects and many more animals that inhabit the property. You will see and learn about the life cycle of butterflies, from collecting their eggs to releasing them into the butterfly garden and forest. Here in Costa Rica, we are committed to conserving the environment and the natural habitat of our animals and plants.
