Guanacaste Airport—proud member of the VINCI Airports network—has reached an exciting milestone: the arrival of its 15 millionth passenger since opening its new terminal in 2012. The lucky traveler? Jameka Johnson of Houston, Texas, who landed on Southwest Airlines flight WN4977 this past Tuesday afternoon—on her birthday, no less!
To mark the occasion, the terminal buzzed with live folkloric music and the signature warmth of Guanacaste’s hospitality. Jameka was surprised with an exclusive, sustainably crafted handbag made from retired airplane seat leather and fibers from pineapple leaves. This one-of-a-kind gift was designed by Costa Rican brand Wearsos and hand-painted by Turrialba-based artist Fio Quirós, featuring the olive ridley sea turtle—an icon of Guanacaste Airport and a symbol of the region’s adventurous spirit.
In addition to her eco-chic gift, Jameka received luxury welcome services courtesy of VPass, as well as gifts from local travel companies. Visibly moved, she shared, “I’m super surprised—and it feels amazing, especially because it’s my birthday! Thank you for the celebration.”
This landmark moment highlights the rising global appeal of Guanacaste as a premier travel destination. With its unmatched mix of beaches, nature, and culture, the region is capturing the imagination of visitors worldwide.
Southwest Airlines also celebrates its 10th anniversary of operations in Costa Rica this year. “We’re thrilled to commemorate both milestones alongside our partners,” said Robert Robles Cortes, Southwest’s Regional Manager for Central America. “Costa Rica continues to be a place our customers love to visit.”
César Jaramillo, General Manager of Guanacaste Airport, summed it up best: “Fifteen million travelers isn’t just a number—it’s a testament to the trust placed in Guanacaste as a world-class destination. This motivates us to keep growing, innovating, and delivering excellence for every traveler who chooses our region for leisure or business.”
Here’s to the next 15 million—and you could be next! Come, discover Costa Rica, and set off on an unforgettable journey that starts right here in Guanacaste!
