Every July 25th, we at TAM Travel Corporation, are delighted to join our beautiful nation of Costa Rica in honoring one of the most meaningful dates on our calendar: Annexation of Nicoya Day (Anexión del Partido de Nicoya).
This historic celebration commemorates the day in 1824 when the people of Nicoya and Santa Cruz voted, through a peaceful plebiscite, to join Costa Rica. At the time, this region—then known as the Partido de Nicoya—was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala. But inspired by shared values and a vision for a prosperous future, its citizens chose to unite with Costa Rica.
Though Liberia initially hesitated, it too embraced this path of unity just a few years later, completing what would become the beloved province of Guanacaste—now a cornerstone of Costa Rica’s cultural identity and tourism landscape.
Today, July 25th is one of the most colorful and exciting national celebrations featuring traditional music, folk dancing, delicious cuisine, and a deep sense of gratitude. It’s a moment to honor the Nicoyans’ wisdom, Costa Rica’s welcoming spirit, and the cultural richness that makes Guanacaste so special.
