Delta Airlines Launches Direct Flights from Detroit to Guanacaste Starting December 2025
Guess what? Travelers from the U.S. Midwest will soon have easier access to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, as Delta Airlines announces a brand-new direct route from Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to Guanacaste Airport (LIR), beginning December 20, 2025. This marks the first-ever direct connection between Costa Rica and the city of Detroit—and Guanacaste will be the only airport in the country to offer it.
The weekly flight, scheduled every Saturday, will be operated on a Boeing 737-900 ER with a 180-seat capacity. This addition expands Delta’s footprint in Costa Rica, complementing its existing direct services from Atlanta, Boston, and Minneapolis.
The new route opens the door for increased visitor arrivals from a region with strong travel potential, especially ahead of Costa Rica’s peak tourism season. With its rich blend of sun, beach, nature, and adventure, Guanacaste continues to attract international tourists seeking both relaxation and unforgettable experiences.
For Delta, this move reinforces its position as a key airline in the U.S.–Costa Rica market. For Guanacaste, it’s a strategic win—supporting regional economic growth through tourism, job creation, and increased international connectivity.
U.S. travelers consistently rank among Costa Rica’s top visitors. In the first four months of 2025 alone, over 634,000 Americans arrived by air. Their interests align perfectly with what Guanacaste offers: from wildlife observation and national parks to surfing, hot springs, canopy tours, and culinary exploration.
This new route represents more than just an air connection; it’s another step forward in making Costa Rica—and especially Guanacaste—more accessible, more competitive, and more attractive for North American travelers. As if you needed another reason to visit Costa Rica! We’ll see you soon!
