Hello dear friends!
As the most experienced travel and destination management company in Costa Rica, TAM Travel Corporation is proud to spotlight one of the most heartfelt and iconic celebrations in our national calendar: Día de la Virgen de Los Ángeles, held every August 2nd.
Known affectionately as La Negrita, the Virgen de los Ángeles is the patron saint of Costa Rica. According to legend, her small statue was miraculously discovered in 1635 by a young girl in Cartago. Each time the statue was removed, it mysteriously reappeared where it had been found—believed to be a divine sign. Since then, La Negrita has become a symbol of faith, hope, and unity for Costa Ricans across generations.
Join the Romería: A Journey of Faith and Unity
Every year, over 2 million pilgrims walk from all corners of the country—some from hundreds of kilometers away—to reach the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles in Cartago. Many complete the final stretch of the journey on their knees, a moving expression of devotion. Streets fill with energy, gratitude, songs, and shared purpose as locals and visitors alike join the Romería, Costa Rica’s largest spiritual pilgrimage.

For Costa Ricans, this isn’t just a religious celebration—it’s a powerful reflection of solidarity, culture, and national identity. Whether you join the walk, witness the vibrant crowds, or simply soak in the atmosphere, it’s an unforgettable moment to experience Costa Rica at its most heartfelt.
